Liberty plays spoiler as Splendora tries to secure playoff spot

SPLENDORA — After four wins a season ago, the Splendora girls basketball team are on the cusp of a playoff spot under new coach Kagan Angers.

There was a chance Tuesday night to secure one of the four spots out of District 20-4A against Liberty. But it just wasn’t meant to be.

Splendora briefly led with over six minutes left in the game before the Panthers pulled away to a 44-34 on the Wildcats’ home floor and in front of a good crowd.

Splendora (15-15, 5-3) entered a game ahead of Huffman-Hargrave for second place with its lone two district losses coming to state-ranked Hardin-Jefferson, which is in the district lead by two full games.

“We have to keep fighting the good fight,” Angers said afterwards. “We control our own destiny. We just have to stick to our guns and we kind of let it slip away a little bit. Stuff just wasn’t falling. Sometimes we rely heavily on our shots. Stuff wasn’t falling, we didn’ get as many rebounds as we normally get.”

It was a senior night, a lively crowd and much on the line. And the Panthers (14-18, 3-5), a team Splendora beat by a point earlier this month in Liberty, played spoiler.

Both teams struggled to get in a rhythm off the tip.

Splendora outscored the Panthers 7-4 in the first eight minutes with Kami Barrow netting five of those points for the Wildcats.

Splendora turned it over six times while Liberty had five giveaways. The Wildcats shot 3-for-12 to the Panthers' 2-for-8.

Liberty stayed in contention at the line in the second quarter before a five-point spurt just before halftime gave it an 18-13 lead heading to the locker room.

Madyson Goudeau hit a 3-pointer from the left corner at the buzzer to cap a nine-point effort in the first half.

Destinee Willis made a 3-pointer and accounted for all six points by the Wildcats in the second quarter.

Bethany Owens, one of four 12th graders honored pregame on Senior Night, went on a tear with four straight buckets at one point for the Wildcats.

“I know that those seniors take pride and that with it being Senior Night, they just said ‘alright, it’s time to go’. (Coach) said what he said and it’s our time. She turned it on, took control and that’s what she does best.”

Taylor Burns knocked down a jumper for a 25-24 lead at the 2:50 mark of the third quarter, but Liberty immediately took back the lead with a mini 5-0 run by Goudeau, who finished with a game-high 18 points.

Liberty led 29-28 heading to the fourth.

After a quick bucket by Tay Curry for Liberty, Owens and Buford his back-to-back buckets for a 32-31 lead.

Liberty closed the night with a 12-1 run for the win.

Owens finished with 10 points for Splendora while Willis and Burns each had seven apoece.

“We have to live and learn and get past it,” Angers said. “I love the response the girls give every time they’ve faced adversity. They have faced adversity for a couple years and this year they have faced adversity.”

Splendora has won five of seven and with two games left on the district schedule, the Wildcats are still in good shape to make the playoffs. Just needs a win and a Liberty loss at the moment. Splendora heads to Hamshire-Fannett Friday night.

“You have to use the frustration that you feel,” Angers said. “And in these next games we will have to use it.”

Splendora hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2020. It’s 15 wins this season surpasses the combined win total of 14 the past two years.

Angers, a Splendora alum who played for boys head coach Jason Vela, is encouraged by how his team fights for each other.

“We breakout every day on defense and family,” Angers said. “That’s what is going to keep us in it. Anything can happen. The culture is what’s keeping us going.”
